Affogatos in the Afternoon.

1-27-2025

Gloomy, cold Mondays, a perfect way to start the week I suppose.

Freezing cold morning today, 43 degrees F, the drive to class was accompanied by my favorite country and folk songs as I sat and waited for the car to warm up. Despite the cloud of the rain that has since passed over my town, you could see the snow finally topping off the San Bernardino mountains. I had a cup of black coffee and a croissant for breakfast which, admittedly, was not all too filling... Stuck in traffic I remembered this beautiful suit I had seen about 4 times in a thrift store downtown (that connects to a hair salon!) which was both unfortunately too small on me and very expensive, as almost everything in that store. I mourned the tailoring of the 70s and 80s, where suits didn't look like straightjackets and draped over oh-so handsome yuppie looking Ralph Lauren models juuuuust right... we really could have had it all...

Upon arriving to class, I realized I had forgotten my literature teacher would be out, and we would instead just watch a movie as the very uninterested sub didn't quite know what to do, and seemed to prefer his book to actually making up something on the go for students. I didn't mind though, chitchatting with my friend Bryan and scolding him for sending me stupid videos was better than absolutely nothing. Class was majorly uninteresting today. I did have a wonderful conversation with a classmate later in the day on baking and cooking. She was quite shocked to learn I've never had onion rings, which is just another addition to my very long list of foods I have never tried. I am ashamed of myself for this, and have been repeatedly received the pity of many for never trying lobster, crab, oysters, grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, caesar salads, brisket, and so on and so forth. During this time, I told her of my woes, of not having had a chocolate chip cookie in what seems like forever, to which she abruptly stood up and excused herself. A few minutes later, she reappeared with a tupperware FULL of chocolate chip cookies and oh-so graciously offered me one, to which I almost fell to my knees and prayed to her for. I love Cora very dearly, she shares my love for wonderful foods and has an unfortunate potato allergy...

I ordered for pickup an affogato and planned to rush over between classes to pick it up. I arrived, out of breath and with a mild headache slowly working it's way in as, despite the cold, the sun was glaring down on me the whole walk downtown. I picked my affogato up, asked for a drizzle of chocolate, and sat down to write some bulletpoints for todays entry. Oh god... when I tell you this was the greatest thing I have ever had... goodness, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I will never love anything else, caffine-based, as much as I love this. Although, writing this I wonder, is tiramisu caffine based? Or is that just the cherry ontop to the lord's most perfect, lovely, and heavenly dessert ever made? Hmm... will have to think on this...

My work with the newspaper today was overall boring as hell. A teacher that my cowriter and I had messaged 2 weeks ago FINALLY replied to our emails, we had to send him a very polite message, as polite as we could, to tell him that he was too late and the article had been canceled already. I went home, very tired, had a proper dinner, and discussed knitting projects with my lover.

As dull as this day might have been, the small joys between made it all the more better. My sweet-tooth has been satisfied, and I made it home safe and sound to good food, a warm bed, and all that I love. What more could you ask for?
